Top 8 Reasons I don’t need a Verizon iPhone
1. I dont think the service is that bad
Living in New York, I’m supposed to drop every phone call and never get email. This rarely happens, I know of a few dead spots where I’ll consistently drop a call (25th street between 9th and 10th Ave for instance.) There’s places that I can’t make a call (like the back of a bar in the basement of a concrete building.) Granted there’s been times that I cant use data (like at a Jay-Z concert though its randomly happened – probably a single cell tower being worked on.) This its nothing that I would actually complain about, or go though the drama of switching carriers.
2. I need simultaneous voice and data
It seems that 100% of the people I know get lost on their way from New Jersey to JFK 100% of the time and 100% of the time they call me asking for directions. I put the call on speaker – switch to Google Maps and route them back. Its also especially helpful when on the phone with my fiancee and searching for a place to eat (I take alot of calls on headphones while on the street.)
3. ATT is faster
HSPA+ maxes out at 7mbs – granted this is theoretical – often I’ll see much less then that, more like 0.5-1MBs, hopefully as the backhaul and towers are upgraded we’ll start to see faster speeds. Verizon’s 3G CDMA network maxes out at 1Mbs so there’s no room for improvement. Granted we’ll all be on “4G” in 2012 anyway.
4. I had Verizon a few years ago and our break up was not great
I don’t think I’ve ever had a less pleasant experience with a company then Verizon. We ended up having to contact our Congressman before we got satisfaction.
5. Verizon just discontinued their early equipment upgrade program
Verizon used to offer early equipment upgrades (after 20 months, not actually that early) for their subscribers, they just axed that program in January – botch! AT&T has let me resign my 2 year contract and get a discounted iPhone 3G, 3Gs and 4 every summer for the past 3 years!
6. I’m under contract through July 2012
See 5 – in exchange for a shiny new iPhone (and the privilege to sell the old one on the internet) every summer I’m locked in for 12-24 months at any given time.
7. It doesn’t work in Europe
It works in 40 countries including Canada, Mexico, Guam, Hong Kong, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Venezuela, Japan, Jamaica, India, New Zealand – but not in England, Spain, Italy, Germany… you get the picture.
8. I own a bunch of AT&T stock
It was an inheritance – but it pays nice dividends quarterly!
Gran Turismo 5… 5 Days to go!
It feels like I’ve been waiting 5 years for GT5 to be finished… but really its only been 3. I bought my PS3 around February of 2007 when the GT HD Concept was released (in Japanese) it was monumental. Since then we’ve had a $50 paid preview, the free GT Academy. The long wait is finally over and we can finally get involved with the greatest driving simulator in the world, ever.
There’s standard and premium cars. The premium ones have interiors, damage simulation, and higher fidelity modeling. I’m going to list some of my favorite cars so I can have a check list for what I want to drive…
It blows my mind!
I don’t know what it is about Steve Ballmer – but he’s such a joke that he should get his own show on Comedy Central.
iPad Reactions
So looks like I was mostly accurate in my speculations, but lets review some of the details to the iPad.
• Yes, its called the iPad (+1 point) Though iPod Tablet wouldn’t have been a bad name.
• Yes, it has 802.11n (with 3G AT&T) available (+1 point) Sadly you’ll have to wait an extra month to get your 3G iPad (stupid carriers) Will we see micro SIM cards on the next MacBook update?
• Screen… 1024×768, 9.7″… more like a 4:3 resolution (+1 point anyway)
• No eInk (not surprised)
• No haptic feedback (you know its in a lab somewhere)
• Price… (+1 point) didn’t see 3G being an optional but my numbers were dead on.
• Content… where was McGrawl-Hill? Probably dropped from that slide for bad behavior. Waiting for the Marvel announcement… can you say every issue of Iron Man? (+1 point)
• Media… yes (+1 point)
• Connections… dock connector (+1 point)
• Cameras… decidedly missing, though who video chats anyway.
• Processor… Apple A4 1Ghz SOC – Hotttt! Can’t wait to get it in my iPhone as well.
General reactions… haters hate on but this is really awesome. I was a little tense about it not having a built in IM / iChat client but with no multitasking support it makes sense not to tease people with it. Push notifications are supported (it is an iPod after all) so BeeJive or AOL can write a killer client and I can just jump back and forth while sitting on my couch.
One of the hardest decisions will be which model to get… $499 will get you a completely satisfactory model, however for just $329 more you get more storage then you’ll know what to do with (Last 3 seasons of Top Gear, Beatles Box Set, Dylan, Stones Discography… I know what to do with it) and a $15/month 3G connection so you’ll always have the internet. Seems more or less worth it, though you’ll want to trade it in in a year for iPad 2.
iWork for iPad is extremely exciting, as someone who spends alot of time making presentations, being able to sit down in a comfy chair and read through the deck with all the transitions and graphics present and edible is truly a killer app.
Let’s talk tablet.
Or should I say- your new computer.
You’re probably thinking, “Wow, you really think apple will build a netbook in the form of a tablet?” No, actually, I don’t. And you’d be a fool to think Apple would ever release such an also-ran product.
On the contrary, what I’m expecting today is really the “most important” thing Steve Jobs has worked on in his entire life. That’s right, he plans on killing the desktop. Not for you, dear reader, but for your grandmother, your secretary who hasn’t yet mastered saving to the share drive, and your elementary school kids. Read more…
